About your nurse

Hello there! I'm Danielle.

I'm an oncology clinical nurse specialist & founder of Peachtree RN. I started my nursing career as an inpatient oncology nurse in Lancaster, PA.

There, I completed my Nurse Residency (our EBP project was on port flush & blood waste methods-we won!) and served on my unit's education & clinical informatics committees.

About 4 years later, I applied for and transitioned into a Nurse Educator/Clinical Nurse Specialist Fellow role. During grad school, I worked as the oncology nurse educator on the inpatient unit where I grew up. I was also introduced to ambulatory cancer care including infusion, clinic, and radiation oncology.

During that time, I created the 8 Lime Oncology Rookie Book for new or new-to-oncology nurses. I focused on what was most relevant to the unit's patient population, such as new AML, post-op breast flap reconstruction, treatment toxicities, and end-of-life care.

I also included best practices on nurse-sensitive indicators like central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) and falls prevention.

I had no idea that I would ever create anything beyond that rookie book, or that I'd end up started my own business based around it, but I'm glad I decided to save one of these books for the nostalgia.

Shortly after graduating and passing my boards, the hospital started cutting non-essential positions to recover from lost revenue due to covid, and I lost my new CNS job.

I eventually found myself creating patient and HCP cancer education as a medical editor at the American Cancer Society.

At this point, I missed oncology nursing. I missed oncology nurses. A lot of folks don't know what a CNS is or that they are one of four APRN roles. When I was in grad school, our advisor always said that the CNS is the nurses' nurse, and I've never been able to find a better way to put it.

My focus as a CNS is supporting the nurse, whether that be consulting at the bedside, as an EBP mentor, quality improvement expert, ethical consult, or you just need to grab some chocolate and hide for a minute - that was truly what I felt most connected to as an oncology nurse.

Over the last ten years, I've created resources, cheat sheets, prep classes, orientation books, and other educational tools for oncology nurses. I also have dyslexia and learning from long texts just doesn't do it for me! I'd end up re-writing notes and always felt like I was memorizing more than I was learning.

Whether you are a brand-new nurse, new-to-oncology, or an experienced clinician, I'm glad you're here! I'd love to hear from you, and my mailbox is always open.

Wishing you all the very best things,

Danielle Petri
